Safety in Tawi-Tawi
Generally calm, and the province has worked hard at that reputation. It is the part of BARMM most often recommended to visitors without local ties. Foreign advisories covering the Sulu Archipelago frequently name Tawi-Tawi in the same breath as Sulu and Basilan even though the situations differ; read the current text rather than the headline. Coordinate island trips through the provincial tourism office, which is normal practice here rather than a precaution.
Tawi-Tawi Island is the main island of the province, with a little more than half its land. At 580.5 km² it is the 21st-largest island of the Philippines and the third-largest in the Sulu Archipelago, about 55 km long and between 10 and 23 km wide, rising to 549 m. It is of volcanic origin, hilly and heavily wooded, with white sand beaches and rocky coasts, and is shared by Bongao, Languyan, Panglima Sugala and Tandubas.
The island supports many endemic species, among them the Tawitawi brown dove and the Sulu hornbill, while the Sulu bleeding-heart may already be extinct. Clearing for farms and settlements in recent decades has sharply reduced their forest, and many of these birds are listed as critically endangered.
