Safety in Tawi-Tawi
Generally calm, and the province has worked hard at that reputation. It is the part of BARMM most often recommended to visitors without local ties. Foreign advisories covering the Sulu Archipelago frequently name Tawi-Tawi in the same breath as Sulu and Basilan even though the situations differ; read the current text rather than the headline. Coordinate island trips through the provincial tourism office, which is normal practice here rather than a precaution.
Panguan is a tiny island of about 0.06 square kilometres in Sitangkai, 50 kilometres from Sabah. Its other name, Malamanok, means eat chicken in Sama-Bajau: travellers heading to Sabah stopped here to eat roasted chicken before the last leg.
A small Sama Dilaut community lives here alongside a military barrack and a flagpole. The island was used as a hideout by the Abu Sayyaf until Philippine Marines took it in April 2017, and the flag went up on 29 April that year.
The provincial tourism office counts it among Tawi-Tawi's most visited spots.

The Philippine flag was raised here on 29 April 2017, beside a military barrack, on the last island of the Sulu Archipelago before Malaysia, 50 km from Sabah.

Clear the trip with the municipality and the provincial tourism office, and bring your own food and drinking water, since the island has little of either.
