Safety in Basilan
Basilan carries standing foreign-government advisories, and several countries advise against all travel to parts of it. The situation around Lamitan and the coastal corridor is markedly better than the advisories’ blanket framing, and Filipinos travel there routinely. That is not the same as it being unremarkable. Coordinate with the provincial or city tourism office, travel with local contacts, stay on the main corridor, and do not improvise into the interior municipalities.
Maluso lies on the south-western side of Basilan and is known for its beaches, rivers and wide mangroves. Its river, locally called Subah Maluso, is tied to the town's beginnings and was noted as a source of fresh water by European sailors; it appears in James Horsburgh's India Directory of 1843.
In July 2022 the town launched Marayaw Maluso, a programme to make it a peace and eco-tourism hub. A list of the region's waterfalls places Garlayan Falls and Mahayahay Falls in Maluso.
