When to go
December. Mother Kalanganan, the barangay around the mosque, holds the Layagan crab festival every December, and on 19 December 2025 the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival's Guinakit fluvial parade set off from the Mother Kalanganan boulevard.
Safety in Cotabato City
Routinely visited, and the calmest introduction to the region. Checkpoints on the approach roads are normal and quick. Standard city sense applies and little more, though foreign governments still write advisories covering mainland Mindanao broadly, so a traveler on institutional insurance should read their own before booking.
Four minarets, a gold central dome and a prayer hall built to hold several thousand people, standing in open ground on the western edge of the city. It was funded by the Sultan of Brunei, whose name it carries, and opened in 2011.
The scale is the point and photographs undersell it — the approach across the forecourt is what registers. Inside, the ornament is restrained: geometry and calligraphy, no figures, in the way of the tradition.
It is a working congregational mosque, busiest at Friday midday prayer, and it is used by the city rather than maintained as a monument.
A rehabilitation paid for by the Office of the Chief Minister was handed over on 1 July 2025: waterproofing, repainting, air-conditioning, a new office building and a perimeter fence. The Bangsamoro heritage commission now manages the mosque, which hosts congregational prayers, janazah rites and weddings, and visitors are asked to keep proper decorum inside.
Visit the mosque outside prayer times, dressed modestly
Cover arms and legs, bring a headscarf if you are a woman, take your shoes off before the prayer hall and stay away during Friday midday prayer unless you are attending.

Kalanganan's fishponds produce hundreds of tons of crab a year, enough for the barangay to call itself a crab capital; mud crab is the dish to ask for nearby.
