Basilan carries standing foreign-government advisories, and several countries advise against all travel to parts of it. The situation around Lamitan and the coastal corridor is markedly better than the advisories’ blanket framing, and Filipinos travel there routinely. That is not the same as it being unremarkable. About this place
The Datu Kalun Shrine is a triangular park in the heart of downtown Lamitan, built as a tribute to Pedro Cuevas, known as Datu Kalun, who took over leadership from the native chieftains and founded the settlement in 1886, and is remembered as a Yakan leader.
The Museum of Lamitan shows the colour of the Lami-Lamihan festival and the Yakan's traditional textiles, and doubles as the town's information centre.
