Safety in Maguindanao del Norte
Mixed, and worth treating by municipality rather than by province. The Awang corridor and the coastal towns see routine traffic. Some interior municipalities carry a heavier security presence and are not places to arrive unannounced. Local advice before an interior trip is the working rule.
About this place
Camp Abubakar was once a stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The residence of its founder, Sheikh Salamat Hashim, built in 1990, served as a command centre during the armed struggle.
On 3 July 2025 the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage unveiled its first historical marker here. Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 61 provides for a memorial marker bearing the names of the fallen and an eco-park in the camp, still to be built.
