Also known as Chinese Pier.
The place
Downtown Bongao's old pier, where boats leave for the outer islands, next to the town's public market.
Market
Traced to its sources since the guide was written.
When to go
Before noon if you are catching a boat: public boats to Simunul usually leave around midday.
Safety in Tawi-Tawi
Generally calm, and the province has worked hard at that reputation. It is the part of BARMM most often recommended to visitors without local ties. Foreign advisories covering the Sulu Archipelago frequently name Tawi-Tawi in the same breath as Sulu and Basilan even though the situations differ; read the current text rather than the headline. Coordinate island trips through the provincial tourism office, which is normal practice here rather than a precaution.
The Chinese Pier is the busy waterfront of downtown Bongao. Public boats leave from here for Simunul, Sibutu, Sitangkai, Sipangkot and Liyaburan, and painted motorboats tie up beside colourful lepa boats.
Guides pair it with a walk through the public market, where jeepneys leave daily for Panglima Sugala and Languyan.
Walk the market and the pier
Guides suggest a walk around the market and the old Chinese Pier.
lakwatsero.comCatch a public boat to the islands
Public boats run from the Chinese Pier to Simunul, Sibutu, Sitangkai, Sipangkot and Liyaburan; other islands need a hired boat.
transitpinas.comMardo's, if you are not in a hurry
The busy downtown cafe on the Circumferential Road warns on its menu that patience is a virtue; Tawi-Tawi kitchens can ask for 4 hours' notice for specials such as kinilaw.
garage.com.phPastries at the port-side cafe
A small cafe by the port puts a plate of pastries in front of every customer, and you pay only for what you eat.
garage.com.phCuracha and lobster
Giant curacha crabs and big lobsters are caught around Tawi-Tawi and are much more affordable here than in other fishing towns.
nomadicexperiences.comTarambulan at the Ramadhan food market
During Ramadhan the food market comes alive in the late afternoon; tarambulan, a folded pancake heaped with chocolate, is a favourite. The provincial Ramadhan Night Market at the Masjid Raayat complex runs 6 pm to 11 pm.
